Gear

I Currently have the very popular Sony A7 IV.  I had the A7 III, but it went for a swim in the North Atlantic.  (Good thing I had insurance.)  Before that I had a Canon T6i, and a Canon T3.

Sony lenses: 12-24mm f4, 24-105mm f4, 70-300 f4-5.6, and 20-70mm f4.

I think the A7IV is great for the type of shooting I do. The new 20-70 lens is now my favorite, as it is light and has very low chroma.  The 12-24 is exceptional for ultra wide and scapes with near objects.

The tripod I use is a Leofoto. It is sturdy enough for the A7, and light enough to take on a 5 mile walk.

Filters: UV & CPL are B+W.  ND’s are Nisi, which have a very low color cast. I am ready to replace everthing with a magnetic system, and get rid of the filter wrenches I need way to often.  For the 12-24 bulbous lens I have the Nisi system. It works well but is big to carry and takes a bit of time to set up.  When I need it, like for geysers at Yellowstone it is great.

Safety stuff: Black Diamond headlamp, InReach mini, and a wide brim hat.

Software

For file managment I use Lightroom.  I almost always shoot brackets, and LR is the only product I know of that will auto stack the bracketed images.  To develope my images I use Capture One.  Not so popular, but I feel it is better then Adobe stuff for non-destructive processing.  The only other software I use is DxO Pure Raw for ocasional high ISO noise reduction. Capture One has in-built luminosity masking, so no need for another app for that.

On the trail, I use All Trails for nav, usually on my phone, but sometims on an 8 inch Samsung tablet.
